Modi dares PM to SIT test

Modi dares PM to SIT test

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday virtually launched the campaign for the Assembly election from this ancient temple town of north Gujarat by daring the Prime Minister to face an inquiry into the Coalgate scam by a Special Investigation Team supervised by the Supreme Court.

Dropping enough hints that the BJP's agenda for the forthcoming elections would be the UPA-led Centre's "injustice to Gujarat", Modi alleged that the Congress had been misusing the CBI against the State in several matters. He also joked that the Congress would contest the Gujarat elections in 'alliance' with the CBI.

Launching the month-long Vivekananda Yuva Vikas Yatra from this temple town 105 kilometres north of Ahmedabad, Modi said that he has emerged victorious from several SIT probes and dared the Prime Minister to face a similar probe into the 'Coalgate' scam. "Let there be a competition in facing SIT probes, let us see who emerges clean," Modi dared the Prime Minister amidst cheers from the nearly 25,000-strong gathering.

The text and tenor of Modi's speech at the launch ceremony bore strong resemblance to the 2002 State-wide 'Gujarat Gaurav Yatra' which culminated in a landslide victory for the BJP in the Assembly elections. While the main target of his speeches during 2002 Yatra was 'Miyan Musharraf', there are indications that it would be the "Centre's injustice to Gujarat" this time.

Modi not only dared the Prime Minister to face a SIT probe but also asked him to compete with Gujarat on development agenda. The Chief Minister also advised the Prime Minister "if you cannot find any solution to any problem, just follow Gujarat blindly, the problem would be solved".

Modi castigated the Congress for challenging the Constitutional authorities like the CAG simply because it has unearthed the 'Coalgate' scam. He reminded the gathering that the Congress had raised similar doubts about the Supreme Court too following rulings on the 2G Spectrum scam.

The Chief Minister said that the Congress is behaving like late Indira Gandhi in whipping up sentiments against constitutional authorities like CAG and the Supreme Court whenever verdicts inconvenient to them have come. Modi ridiculed the Congress for approaching the High Court seeking a ban on the television advertisements showing the Centre slapping Gujarat by way of reducing kerosene and gas allocations and ban on exports of cotton. He said that if the Centre resumes adequate supplies to Gujarat the 'slapping' advertisement too would be taken off the air.

Responding to the Congress call to people to oppose the Yatra, Modi asked, "Does the Congress want Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi to face the same opposition if they come to Gujarat?"

Modi said that instead of opposing his yatra, the Congress should do well in organising their own programmes and the Government might extend help to them in doing so. Engaging the huge gathering in an interactive session, Modi got endorsements for all the development programmes of his Government.
