Vigilance names VS as first accused

The Kerala Vigilance has named Opposition leader VS Achuthanandan as the first accused in the probe report it has prepared in the case pertaining to the allotment of a piece of land to one of his relatives when he was the State Chief Minister between 2006 and 2011.

KP Rajendran of the CPI, who was Revenue Minister in the Achuthanandan Cabinet, is the second accused in the case in which there are a total of seven accused. There were eight accused in the FIR filed in January but the number has now been brought down to seven as former Land Revenue Commissioner KR Muraleedharan, fourth accused, would now become approver.

According to sources, the Vigilance wanted to turn Muraleedharan into an approver as he had given "crucial evidences and statements" against Achuthanandan. Sheila Thomas, former principal secretary to Achuthanandan, recipient of land TK Soman, former Kasaragod collectors Krishnan Kutty and Anand Singh and Achuthanandan's aide A Suresh will be the other accused.

The case pertains to the allotment of 2.33 acres of land in Kasaragod district with sales rights to Achuthanandan's relative Soman, an ex-serviceman, towards the end of the former LDF government's term. The land was originally assigned to Soman in 1977 but he had not taken possession of it due to legal complications.
