‘Trivedi won’t avail bail until charges dropped’

‘Trivedi won’t avail bail until charges dropped’

The Bombay High Court on Tuesday granted bail to controversial political cartoonist Aseem Trivedi on a personal bond of Rs 5,000, amidst strong indications that the Maharashtra Government might drop sedition charges against him in the coming days.

However, in a twist to the drama involving Trivedi’s bail, India Against Corruption (IAC) which is crusading for the dropping of sedition charges against the Kanpur-based cartoonist, made it clear in the night that he would not accept the bail granted to him by the High Court, till the charges made against him under 124(A) of the IPC (sedition) were dropped.

IAC Mumbai unit’s senior functionary Preeti Sharma Menon said that the question of Trivedi accepting the bail granted to him by the high court on the basis of a PIL filed by a city-based lawyer Sanskar Marathe did not arise. Trivedi’s lawyer Vijay Hiremath confirmed as much, when he said: “I have not gone through the high court’s order. As of now, he will continue to remain in judicial custody”.
