Cong ex-chief takes dig at Virbhadra over corruption
In an apparent attack on Himachal Congress chief Virbhadra Singh and an indication of fresh post poll infighting in the party, former Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee (HPCC) president Kaul Singh Thakur on Wednesday said the party has had zero tolerance towards corruption and a tainted person cannot become the Chief Minister.
“Party and Congress president has always maintained zero tolerance towards corruption and several Ministers involved in corrupt practices have landed in jail. I don’t think any person facing corruption charges will be made Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh,” said Thakur, who was replaced by former Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh just before the polls as the State party chief.
Thakur dismissed reports of his defeat as totally absurd. “I will win my seat for record eighth time and one should not have doubt over it,” he said.
“Two Congress workers were fielded against me as Independent candidates in the elections and were financed with crores of rupees by someone at the top level, so that I don’t win the elections, but due to the people’s faith in me, I will be winning the elections,” said Thakur in an indirect attack on Virbhadra Singh.
“Party high command was briefed that I am loosing the elections and will not be able to reach the Assembly this time, but fielding of candidates and everything else has been taken note of by the party leadership,” he said. Thakur added that Uttrakhand was the best example where Central leadership decided the Chief Minister of the State.
“In the party, elected representatives elect their chief ministerial candidate and final decision rests with the party leadership and Congress president Sonia Gandhi,” he added. Thakur said the support for the party was there due to the four years he spent in strengthening the party at the grassroots level.
Earlier, senior Congress leader and Dalhousie candidate, Asha Kumari had also hit out at the state leadership saying that graft-tainted Virbhadra Singh cannot become a Chief Minister.
