    Assam party recalls ‘Nehru betrayal’

Assam’s regional political party Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) on Tuesday observed ‘Betrayal Day’ to mark 50 years of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s speech to the nation on November 20, 1962, where he bid ‘last farewell’ to the people of Assam during the Chinese aggression.

The regional party also hoisted black flags in all district headquarters of the State. The members of the party wore black badges throughout the day to “protest against the continuous betrayal of the people by Congress Governments at the Centre as well as in Assam.”

“The then Prime Minister delivered a speech on November 20, 1962 after the Chinese Army defied Indian defence and arrived in Bomdila, where he bode last farewell to the people of the region. This incident had been recognised as a historical betrayal of the people of the region and is also known as a black chapter in the history,” AGP publicity secretary Manoj Saikia said on Tuesday, adding that following in Nehru’s footsteps, subsequent Congress Governments have always been looking at the people of Assam with a ‘step-motherly’ attitude.

“The people in Assam and in the northeast region must always remember the betrayal. The anti-people policies of the Congress Government still continues and it is the Congress Governments which have threatened the very existence of Assam by remaining a mute spectator to external aggression through the porous international border with Bangladesh,” Saikia said.

“It is the Congress which has been in power for most of the time after Independence and during this period, the party had turned Assam into a safe haven of illegal Bangladeshi migrants for its power-centric politics,” he said and appealed the people of the State to remain vigilant towards the ‘domination and divide and rule policy’ of the Congress.

Meanwhile, the regional party, while expressing condolence over the demise of former Minister and one of party’s vice presidents Sahidul Alam Choudhury, declared five-day mourning to pay tribute to the deceased leader.

Saikia said that the party has decided to postpone all its programmes till November 24 from Tuesday and said that its offices across the State will be closed till November 24.
