Jaya firm on anti-FDI stance
J Jayalalithaa, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and general secretary of the AIADMK, has made it clear on Tuesday that her party would vote against any kind of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in multi-brand retail sector.
“I have made it clear much earlier. We are against FDI in retail. I will not allow it in Tamil Nadu. There is no change in our stand,” said Jayalalithaa. She was speaking to reporters after a meeting of the AIADMK MPs at the party headquarters on Tuesday. The AIADMK has nine members in the Lok Sabha.
The AIADMK leader’s stance is clear and without any ambiguity. Though she is not against FDI in key infrastructure sectors, Jayalalithaa has said there was no compromise in multi-brand retailing. “Tamil Nadu will not allow any kind of FDI in multi brand retailing,” she had declared recently to a gathering of industrialists from India and abroad.
When asked about her stance on a no-confidence motion being planned by Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee against the UPA Government, Jayalalithaa said that nobody has approached her party soliciting support for the motion till date. “Let those planning to introduce the no-confidence motion approach us first. We will decide at that time,” she said. But Jayalalithaa was quick in pointing out that the party which brings in the no-confidence motion should ensure that it has the strength to get the motion passed.
Jayalalithaa said her party was ready for a mid-term poll also. “The AIADMK is well prepared for mid term polls,” she said. She also termed the recent Spectrum Auction fiasco as stage managed by the union government. “It was a drama and eye wsh enacted by the union government,” she said.
Her stance against the FDI in multi brand has been welcomed by leaders of various trade organisations. “She has been straight forward in her decisions and policies. There is no suspense or mysteries in her dealings as well as decisions,” said a prominent trade leader.
M Karunanidhi, the DMK leader and Jayalalitaa’s bet noire is yet to take a firm decision on the FDI issue. Though the 89-year-old party patriarch had said earlier that his party was against all kind of FDI, he made a volte face recently and said he preferred to keep his party’s decision a suspense. Political observers in Tamil Nadu feel this was nothing but a ploy by the DMK to bargain with the UPA government. Karunanidhi’s daughter Kanimozhi is an accused in the 2G Spectrum Scam and he wants the Manmohan Singh government to extricate her from the ordeal.
Recently, union finance minister P Chidambaram had called on Karunanidhi with a request from the Prime Minister to support the government in the FDI issue. It is certain that the DMK would not do anything against the interest of the UPA government at least till the next Lok Sabha election.
