Neera first UP IAS officer to get jail in recent times
After being handed a three-year jail term by a CBI Court in Ghaziabad, former UP Chief Secretary Neera Yadav probably became the first retired IAS officer to get convicted in the recent history of the bureaucratic fraternity in the State.
But the verdict was more frustrating for senior IAS officer Rajeev Kumar, who is not only a serving officer but is also holding the key post of Principal Secretary, in UP at the moment.
Both Yadav and Kumar have been convicted for three year and slapped a penalty of Rs 1 lakh for their alleged role in the Noida land allotment scam by the CBI court in Ghaziabad on Tuesday.
Yadav was chairperson and CEO of Noida while Rajeev Kumar was the deputy CEO between 1993-95 when they allegedly grabbed huge plots in fraudulent ways and allotted prime plots to the rich and powerful including politicians, industrialists, kin and friends.
Two years back, Yadav was even arrested in this case and served some weeks in Dasna jail before being released on bail.
As far as the conviction is concerned, Yadav and Kumar are the only two IAS officers who in recent times have been convicted. Earlier another former Chief Secretary Akhand Pratap Singh was also arrested by the CBI few years back in a disproportionate asset case and was put behind bars for a considerable time before he finally procured bail.
Interestingly, both Yadav and Singh were unceremoniously removed from the post of Chief Secretary during Mulayam Singh Yadav’s regime (2003-07) following directions of the Supreme Court.
In response to a PIL, the Supreme Court found them ineligible as both were elected as the most corrupt IAS officers in a secret ballot of the members of the fraternity.
The infamous list does not end here. A topper of 1981 batch and Principal Secretary Pradeep Shukla was arrested by the CBI in the controversial scam of National Rural Health Mission. He had to serve a considerable time in jail before getting the bail.
