Modi to stick to his constituency

Modi to stick to his constituency

Gujarat Chief Minister on Monday hinted that he would stick to his present constituency to stand for election in the upcoming Assembly elections, laying to rest rumours that he might contest from elsewhere after delimitation altered the demographics of his current constituency - Maninagar .

While leaders and workers of both the ruling BJP and the Opposition Congress are awaiting approval of their candidates’ lists from respective high commands in Delhi, some traders have arrived to make a fast buck from the impending election fever.

The ruling BJP would announce its candidates’ names for the first phase of polling on Thursday after consultations with the party’s parliamentary board meeting in Delhi where top State leaders including Chief Minister Narendra Modi, state party president RC Faldu, national vice president Parshottam Rupala and others would be present.

Modi has already indicated that he would contest again from the Maninagar constituency in the city from where he has won convincingly twice in 2002 and 2007.

This hint was dropped by Modi himself on Monday night at a “sneh milan” organised for the party workers in eastern part of the city, setting to rest all speculations about the Chief Minister considering a shift from the constituency in the wake of change in the demographic composition of the seat due to the delimitation exercise.

Addressing the BJP workers of Maninagar and nearby areas, Modi asked them to work for his victory only in one constituency while he himself takes the responsibility for the party’s win in the remaining 181 constituencies of the State.

This utterance of Modi was sufficient hint that he would seek re-election from the Maninagar constituency where he had won with a huge margin of 87,000 votes in 2007.

Meanwhile, State BJP president RC Faldu on Tuesday evening announced a list of 86-member State level campaign committee headed by national vice president Parshottam Rupala, Rajya Sabha member.

On the other hand, even before the candidates’ names have been announced, some traders have already set up their shops outside the BJP as well as Congress headquarters here.

Party flags, banners, festoons, badges with party colours, T-shirts with party symbols, caps, key chains and similar campaign materials are on sale at these shops outside BJP and Congress headquarters.

Lucknow-based Agrawal Bandhu has set up shops outside both BJP and Congress offices in the city. Very little sale has commenced till now, but it would pick up once names of the candidates are declared, Anoop Agrawal told The Pioneer on Tuesday.

Agrawal informed that they had transacted a business of around Rs ten lakhs during the last election in the state and expects to do better this time.
