State to probe case of ‘absentee’ doctors

The Bihar Health Department has ordered an inquiry into the role of doctors when victims of the deadly stampede at Adalatganj Ghat in Patna started reaching Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) on Monday.

At least 17 people, including 10 children and 7 women, lost their lives in the stampede at Adalatganj Ghat on the bank of Ganga in the State capital.

State Principal Secretary (Health) Vyasji said that complaints had been received about doctors remaining absent from their duty when victims of the stampede started reaching PMCH. He said that an internal probe committee would be constituted to verify the role of doctors when the dead and the injured people started reaching PMCH. He said that stern action would be taken against absentee doctors.

Relatives of the stampede victims faced a difficult situation when they brought their dear ones to PMCH for treatment as no doctor was present at the hospital.

The situation could be salvaged slightly only when Vyasji took a team of 11 doctors to PMCH late at night but it was too late by that time.

Vyasji said that entry of outsiders would be restricted to the emergency ward of PMCH so that anti-socials do not create disruptions.

The State Government has already asked State Principal Secretary (Home) Amir Subhani to conduct a probe into the incident and uncover the truth.

He told The Pioneer that he has started ground work and the probe will be completed in a “reasonable” time.

RJD chief and former Railway Minister Lalu Prasad, who flew to Patna from New Delhi on Tuesday, said that Chief Minister Nitish Kumar went to Pakistan and entrusted the task of ensuring an incident-free Chhath festival to his trusted lieutenants.

He said that the Chhath tragedy is the outcome of administrative failure and hence, the administration in the State should be toned up to prevent recurrence of such events in future.

He announced a payment of Rs. 50,000 from the party fund to family members of those killed.

The RJD supremo also visited relatives of the deceased to express his sympathy with them. State Congress president Mehboob Ali Kaisar said that the Home Secretary will only reflect the Government’s views in his report and hence an all-party committee should be constituted to inquire into the entire tragedy.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar cancelled a feast for JD(U) leaders at his official residence on Wednesday. The feast was to be attended by JD(U) leaders comprising MPs, MLAs, MLCs, district unit presidents on November 21 at his official residence.

The feast was meant for congratulating JD(U) leaders for success of the ‘Adhikar rally’ at Gandhi Maidan here on November 4.

Amid all hullabaloos that dominated the day, a pall of gloom has descended on the family of Roshan Kumar, who lost his wife and two children in the stampede. Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi visited his residence at Lohanipur and presented cheques to the bereaved family members. CM Nitish Kumar had already announced ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh to the victims` kin.
