KOTTAYAM: Land acquisition procedures have begun for the construction of the proposed Railway overbridge at Thellakom after the State government sanctioned Rs.1.10 crore for the purpose. This was stated by action council which has been spearheading the campaign for the bridge for the past half a decade. The overbridge will replace the existing open level cross at Thellakom.
It will redress the difficulties faced by patients visiting the Kottayam Government Medical College who have to wait for hours at the level cross when it is closed.
The on going process of doubling of the railway line had made the construction of the overbridge all the more critical.
Though the action council has been demanding for an overbridge since 2005, the construction of the bridge was included in the priority list of the State government only in 2007.
The railways for the first time made provision for the construction of the bridge in its 2010 budget when it allocated Rs.40 lakh.
