Thiruvananthapuram: The Speaker of the state assembly G. Karthikeyan Tuesday revoked the suspension of CPM MLAs T.V. Rajesh and James Mathew.
The opposition withdrew the strike inside the assembly after the Speaker issued the letter revoking suspension for showing disrespect to the chair.
On Monday two CPM MLAs were suspended for two days for their unruly behaviour in the House on October 14 during a protest by Opposition over a police firing incident.
The party-led LDF opposition later launched an indefinite sit-in in the assembly protesting the suspension of T V Rajesh and James Mathew following a resolution moved by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy. The LDF members rushed to the well of the House shouting slogans denouncing the action against their colleagues and many of them refused to leave the assembly hall even after Speaker G Karthikeyan adjourned the House for the day demanding the suspension be revoked.
Chandy, who moved the resolution for suspension of the two MLAs, said he was compelled to do so as the members indulged in serious breach of discipline by questioning the authority of the Speaker.
The stand-off between the ruling Congress-led UDF and LDF was sequel to pandemonium in the House on October 14 when a security woman was allegedly assaulted by the suspended MLAs while protesting police firing during a student stir in Kozhikode on October 10. The students were agitating over admission of a student in the Government Engineering College in Kozhikode alleging that it was done in violation of rules.
