Bomb on Rly tracks: Key accused held

Bomb on Rly tracks: Key accused held

The Kerala Police on Monday arrested Santhosh alias Mattam Santhosh (35) of Mudasseril, who had put together the “technically perfect” detonator found on the railway tracks at Velloor between Ernakulam and Kottayam on August 23, from a rubber plantation at Veilyanad in Ernakulam district.

The arrest of Santhosh who had organized the detonator to help his friend Senthil Kumar, a driver, to trap one of his enemies in a serious police case, has reportedly led to the yielding of crucial clues about a powerful blast that occurred at the Ernakulam district Collectorate in July, 2009. Both Santhosh and Senthil have several criminal cases against them.

Santhosh has already admitted to the police’s Crime Branch that he himself had given the detonator to Senthil to be placed on the railway tracks in a bid to trap his enemy MJ Thomas, another driver, in a serious criminal case. The steel lunch box in which the detonator was packed had the name of Thomas inscribed on it.

Sources said Santhosh had told the police that he had got the explosive substances for the detonator from his relative Anoop, a granite quarry worker. Santhosh said that he had organized the materials for fishing purpose. The police were of the view that Anoop had nothing to do with the planting of the detonator. Senthil was arrested on Saturday.

What has prompted the Internal Security Investigation Team of the police to investigate the incident thoroughly is the technical perfection seen in the constitution of the detonator, complete with battery, wires, timer and a mixture of ammonium nitrate and fuel oil. The device was closely similar to the one that exploded on July 10, 2009 at the Ernakulam District Collectorate.

From the interrogation of Senthil that lasted several hours, the police have reportedly learned that Santhosh had close connections with certain Dalit groups based in Ernakulam district. Experts say that the detonator found on the railway tracks and the explosive that went off at the District collectorate were similar technically and component-wise.
