Shrinking workers’ presence at stirs worries CPM

The leadership of the Kerala CPI(M), presently facing unprecedented crises in the context of allegations of following a policy of murderous politics, is worried over the shrinking participation of party workers in the agitation programmes it is organizing.

The organization is also worried about the failure of its feeder outfits in taking up people’s causes effectively.

As per the criticisms aired during discussions on a document at the meeting of the CPIM) State committee in Thiruvananthapuram on Saturday and Sunday, the falling numbers of partymen participating in the agitations is a matter of concern, especially when the party is in need of projecting its united strength to the general public and rivals.

The leaders who spoke at the meeting observed that the reluctance of party workers to participate in agitation programmes was obvious in the protests the party staged at the State Secretariat in Thiruvananthapuram and the 13 district collectorates on August 22 against the “anti-people” policies of the UPA regime in the Centre and the UDF Government in Kerala.

At the same time, a document presented to the meeting of the State committee by secretary Pinarayi Vijayan on Saturday reportedly criticized the feeder organizations of the party for not being able to function effectively. Even youth outfit DYFI was unable to fulfill its intended role by making interventions in issues as per the need of the times, the document observed.

However, a section in the party ascribed this “dysfunction” to the vexed divisionist war as well as the credibility crisis it was facing following the official leadership’s dubious postures over the issue of the murders of Muslim League worker Abdul Shukoor of Ariyil, Kannur and rebel Marxist leader TP Chandrasekharan at Onchiyam, Kozhikode.

This section feels that it is up to the leadership to undergo a process of self-criticism if the party has reached a stage where its own workers are not showing interest in its own agitations. It is also of the view that this lack of interest among partymen in such matters had begun, “as early as during the civic polls of 2010”.

“The leadership is still reluctant to address the real issue,” protested a former district-level leader of the CPI(M) in Alappuzha. “What do they think was the reason for the shrinkage of the Left’s power from over 65 percent panchayats in the State to a mere 35 percent after the civic polls of 2010? They should start their analysis there if they are sincere,” he said.

He said that the party’s official leadership had lost touch with reality amidst its race to pocket the organization as part of the war against octogenarian central committee member VS Achuthanandan. “Also, I don’t think VS’s allegation of right-wing deviation is pointless. If that is so, how can you expect positive response from grassroots comrades?” he asked.

A meeting of the State CPI(M) secretariat which preceded the State committee meet decided to give shape to a public relations defence system to defeat the campaigns against the party (as in the case of the political murders). The move is to constitute special teams from the State level to local level for carrying out campaigns on ideas and ideology.

A document presented at the meeting on the missions to be taken up in organizational level in the next one year felt that the criticisms coming from those with Left-extremist leanings had more listeners than the allegations from the Right. The party had been consistently failing in countering such tendencies, the document said.
